North America in Luxury: New York, the Canadian Rockies and the Art of the Long-Haul Arrival

North America is not one trip. It is a continent of contrasts: a vertical city where dinner reservations are made weeks ahead, and a glacial lake in the Rockies so blue that it looks edited. For a luxury traveller the continent offers some of the strongest hotel, dining and wilderness experiences in the world, and the best way to enjoy it is to pair one great city with one great landscape. In this guide I combine New York City and the Canadian Rockies, two very different destinations that connect well, and I explain the logistics that matter most for a long-haul visitor: the flight, the arrival, the transfers and the connection.

Choosing your season

New York is at its best in spring and autumn, when the weather is mild and the city is full of events. December brings festive lights and high prices, summer can be hot and humid, and winter can be cold. The Canadian Rockies have two strong seasons: summer, from roughly June to September, with long days and open hiking trails, and winter, from December to March, for skiing and snow. Spring and autumn are quieter, with variable conditions. Book early for summer, as the best hotels in the national parks sell out months in advance.

Flying in: the long-haul question

For most overseas visitors, the first decision is where to land. New York has several major airports, and the Rockies are reached through Calgary, which is the usual gateway to Banff and Lake Louise. Many travellers fly into New York for the first part, then connect to Calgary on a domestic or transborder flight. Compare open-jaw tickets, where you arrive in one city and depart from another, because they save backtracking and are often priced similarly to a return.

A premium cabin is worth considering on a trip with a long-haul leg and an early meeting with the Rockies, because arriving rested lets you use your first day. Check the entry rules for your passport. Visitors to the United States and Canada commonly need an electronic travel authorisation or a visa, depending on nationality, and the rules change, so confirm on the official government websites before you buy.

New York City: the luxury city, done properly

New York rewards planning. The great restaurants, theatres and museums are in demand, and a well-timed reservation makes the difference between a memorable evening and a long queue. A sensible base is Midtown or the Upper East Side for classic hotels, or Lower Manhattan for a more modern feel. Three nights is a minimum, and four or five lets you slow down.

  • Morning: a walk through Central Park, and the museums that open early.
  • Afternoon: neighbourhoods rather than landmarks: Greenwich Village, the High Line and Chelsea.
  • Evening: reserve dinner and theatre in advance, and leave time to walk back through the lit streets.
  • Views: choose a clear evening for an observation deck, and book timed tickets ahead.

Arriving in New York can be the most stressful part of the trip. Traffic between the airports and Manhattan is unpredictable, and a taxi line after a long flight is not luxury. A pre-booked car with a driver who tracks your flight makes the first hour calm. I arrange these through GetTransfer, where you can set your hotel and vehicle in advance and confirm a return transfer for your last day.

The Canadian Rockies: Banff and Lake Louise

The Rockies are the reason many people travel to Canada. The scale is enormous: jagged peaks, glacier-fed lakes that glow turquoise because of finely ground rock carried by meltwater, and forests with wildlife. Banff is a lively mountain town with spas, restaurants and an unforgettable grand hotel, and Lake Louise sits about forty minutes away with a famous lakeside setting. Allow at least three nights, so that you can enjoy the lake early in the morning, before the day visitors arrive.

Parks authorities manage access carefully, and some popular lakes are reached by shuttle rather than by private car, so research the current arrangements before your visit and book shuttles or permits early. Weather changes quickly in the mountains: bring layers, waterproofs and sturdy shoes even in summer. Wildlife is part of the experience, but keep your distance and follow the parks guidance.

Getting from Calgary to Banff

The drive from Calgary to Banff takes about an hour and a half in good conditions, and it is a beautiful approach to the mountains. Winter driving can be demanding. If you would rather not drive, a private transfer lets you relax and enjoy the scenery, and you can set it up with the same GetTransfer booking tool in advance.

Stay connected across two countries

Roaming on a single trip across the border can be expensive. A regional eSIM is a clean answer: install it before departure and switch it on when you land. I use Yesim for this. Confirm coverage for both the United States and Canada in the plan details, check that your phone supports eSIM, and keep your home SIM for calls and bank texts. This is particularly useful in the mountains, where you want maps and weather updates working.
